I don't think they "turn handsome", I think they simply figure out how to care more for themselves in the wake of experiencing puberty. For whatever length of time that you invest some effort, you will look good.
The advantages of brushing your hair, wearing fitting garments and holding yourself with confidence can't be stressed enough. Invest some effort, do things that influence you to feel confident, you ought to be "good looking" in no energy :)
