When the lawyer turned musician, Folarin Falana;
popularly known by his stage name, Falz, who is also the son of the legendary human rights activist, Femi Falana officially released his hit single titled "This Is Nigeria", prominent groups and religious institutions in the country, particularly the ISIS Islamic group was outraged.Falz appeared to claim that the moral decay of Nigeria as a country occurs at all levels without exonerating the government and its agencies, such as the police and any other groups or religious institution which I personally concur with.
Falz is not the only Nigerian hip-pop artiste to denounce the prevalent social and moral vices that plague the Nigerian society. We have had hit singles like Falz's "Wehdon Sah", 9ice's "Economy" and Kiss Daniel's "Baba", all aimed at a constructive criticism of societal ills: where we missed it as a country and the way forward.
I strongly believe that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse and as true Nigerians, we all have to join efforts together to salvage our country from its putrid waste in the light of the fact that all Nigerians must be loyal to Nigeria first, then the government, when it deserves it. Nigeria is what it is today because Nigerians are what they are.
In terms of leadership, Nigeria lost the opportunity of experiencing true leadership in her childhood stage, under people like Awolowo and Azikiwe. Now in her youthful stage, Nigeria only has visionless and corrupt leaders. Look, it is hard to be a clean public official in Nigeria. Everything is set up for you to steal. Worst still, your family, relatives and friends expect you to embezzle public funds. A typical example of the fact above is the recent conviction of the ex-governors of Plateau and Taraba states, Dariye and Jolly Nyame for 14 years jail term each for being guilty of financial crimes.
We have young boys into online scams, popularly called ''yahoo boys'' driving cars with prostitutes, popularly called ''slay mamas'' for company. Cars their parent's salaries cannot afford in 3 years. We have delicate businessmen and emergency millionaires with no evident source of income, yet we have sychophants who sing their praises: the promotion of mediocrity over intellectual quality! Nearly every agency in Nigeria is corrupt. Even PHCN will illegally and greedily demand "re-connection fees" from you when they have not officially disconnected your electricity supply.
So was Falz wrong when he sang "This Is Nigeria?"?, absolutely no! So what is the deal? The time has come now for us to restore our values. We as the giant of Africa should set a positive example for other nations in Africa and change the White perception about Nigeria. We will no longer be ashamed to say we are Nigerians.Every true Nigerian should charge himself with the task of making a change out of the mess Nigeria is Change! Change begins with me!
